I have been trying panning shots on bikes for the past two days. My keeper ratio is low, it seems I am getting some vertical movement as I pan. So nothing is really sharp. How do the pros keep all their panning movement along the horizontal plane? Maybe I am jerking my trigger finger.....

Good thought. Try panning with traffic, or without following anything & see if you can pin down the cause.
Generally, it's a crapshoot at first? Sharp subject while still keeping some wheel blur isn't easy & comes with practice.
It depends on the distance to the subject, the angle to the subject, the focal length, the speed of the subject, & the effect that you're trying to get. Sometimes when I'm playing with blurs, I throw a lot away! ;)

Thanks for the tips, PhotosGuy. Good reading. I think my problem was that I tried to get off more than one shot with each pan movement. Maybe that is why I am getting the vertical hiccups in my blurs.

Sebring 2007

Shot this in manual mode which I now think was a better idea. I was able to get the colors to show the way I had desired, but the shutter was a little too slow. This resulted in the back of the car going out of focus, but it almost gives it a sense of ridiculous speed this way.

I agree! Beautiful stuff, and the rear being blurred I think adds to the panning effect. I wouldn't see it as a defect or problem with the photo at all, actually its more difficult to get a result like that then a normal panning shot. As long as the front of the car is sharp then you nailed it.

I'm hoping someone at Porsche or the team bought that photo!

Here are 2 of my first attempts.

While I cut off the end of the bike, it is still my fav so far.

Having to shoot through a fence at the stock car race sucks.

Thanks a lot, and I have been tossing around the idea of trying to contact them and selling it to them. I am sure they could use it on something. It looks like the car is just blowing through the sound barrier. I don't know how to go about contacting them with something like this though.

Thanks again!

Flying Lizard Motorsports dont purchase shots, they have an in house photographer. I dont know if people think its cool or not (i do), but they have a fan photos section of their website. I have some photos up there.
