Can you guys give me some pointers on what settings you used to get these images? Is the focus on one shot or ai servo? Etc etc..

Hey J, how is it going? It has been a long time.

I saw in the 'photographer's rides" thread that you have accumulated a nice collection of rides... very nice! Last time I saw you was on the Gixxer 1000 on the S2S many years ago.

Re: panning, there are a couple of 'how to' threads somewhere in the motorsport section here. They offer great advice and helpful tips.

FYI, I have attached two photos here with full EXIF intact to give you an idea of settings - both shot with 1DMkIIN and 300 2.8 IS. These are straight from the camera with no crop, adjustments or anything - straight from the card. Not the best shots, but what I have available without firing up the storage drives.

As for tips, first tip is practice... a lot. Otherwise, a monopod helps with longer lenses, and I usually shoot in manual, use the centre focus point, AI Servo, IS (if your lens has it) in panning mode 2, and try to focus on one part of the target... for bikes, I usually focus on a decal or logo somewhere on the bike or rider. Start shooting around 1/200 +/- and gradually get to slower shutter speeds. And practice...

I sure others here can offer up lots of good tips and helpful hints.

First shot is shot at 1/250 - it is easier to get a sharp shot at 1/250th. At 1/250, you get a very high keeper rate - at 1/40th (the 2nd shot) the ratio of good shots drops dramatically... for me at least . At 1/250 you get less motion and background blur and hopefully a crisp shot:

Shot 1 at 1/40th - with the bike coming at me, the whole bike will not be in focus (camera at different plane to the bike - another link somewhere on this site explains the concept), although in this shot the front and rear '44' are almost in focus but not the rider. Obviously, at 1/40th there is more motion and background blur:

Mostly, just have fun and practice - you will be surprised how quicky your shots will improve with a little practice.
