They look great, Chris. But not one of them is a panning shot....

Thanks enzo, I suppose they're not as I was using too fast of a shutter but this is my first and only try thus far at panning which makes them my "best" by default haha. I'll know better next time :)

Well there's some panning going on, but it's hardly noticable. Trial and error, it's the only way to get this technique under control. :)

Yeah, "good" panning shots takes practice! It's kind of counter-intuitive -- we are used to being "programmed" to the idea of a fast shutter speed and a wide aperture to get "selective focus" without blurring the subject and having the soft background, but this type of shooting calls for a slow shutter speed, and typically a narrow aperture to keep the subject in focus. The effect is all about learning to track the subject over a span of time/distance (slow shutter speed) and having a good amount of the subject in focus (narrow aperture). And, having a steady panning technique so that the fine details of that subject are crisp and sharp!

A good place to practice is simply an open highway and just repeatedly pan/track vehicles that are going by. Shooting cars travelling at, say, 60mh gives you a feel of how to do things -- take a few hundred shots at various shutter speeds gives you a look at both hit/miss focusing and the effects of varying shutter speeds and the background.

And then, in "real world" venues, the two other things to juggle are your distance from the vehicles and the speed -- both of those will affect your "optimal" shutter speed.

Been a while so here's one of mine from last weekend ...

Car speed probably in excess of 250km/h (~160mph)
Shutter speed 1/60th
Focal Length ~235mm

Bunch more GT1 Astons, Vettes, Nissans, Maseratis and Lambo's over on my website (link in sig or click photo below to go there) ... more galleries to come soon with FIA GT3 and Superleague Formula galleries from same event.
