Not a super low shutter speed (I think it was 1/60) with crazy background blur, but I definitely think it came out cool.

I think I over-sharpened them a little and the additional sharpening by flickR didn't help. These were all taken in manual, 55mm, 1/60, f5.6, ISO100. I'd appreciate any tips/advice. Feb 06, 2013 23:28 | #5391 Definitely not as crazy as Rob's, but practiced some panning while I was at Coolidge. I might get a 2 or 3 stop ND filter to be able to shoot slower while keeping the aperture around f8

Love the Lancair! I had to leave before it took off. www.yipdogstudios.com

Feb 07, 2013 01:20 | #5393 I don't think I'm good enough yet to go that low on the shutter, at least at longer distance. Looks like I can do 1/250 with no problem, maybe 1/160 too, but I guess everything comes with practice. I was surprised at how well the Lancair came out, since all the other shorts of it landing came out pretty bad. Felipe G

Gives more chances at getting one in perfect focus. At the low shutter speeds I'm only getting 1 or 2 I'd consider nailed out of 20-30 pics. Not a great percentage. I was pretty happy shooting around 125-160 but made a challenge to myself to stick around 1/60-1/100. I threw away a ton of pics but that's the beauty of digital!! And from speaking to some of the guys who have been doing this a long time, they are throwing away a lot too at such low shutter speeds. We only get to see the gem out of the stack of pics they sift through. www.yipdogstudios.com

And careful to not go too low on the shutter...my 1/60 and some 1/80 exhibited parallax effect which I really didn't like. I prefer the whole plane to be razor sharp! Glad you guys liked my idea and tested it out Jeffrey

I really need to pick up some ND's I would have never thought about using one. I see them as something for shooting water, landscapes, etc, but the idea of using one to obtain prop blur never crossed my mind. Felipe G
