Did you use the 7d? 7D + 300mm f4L + 1.4x TC. I've used single point with expansion for the last year or so and have been pleased with the results.

I think the main thing for focus, is just to relax. Don't swerve the lens back and forth five times in a single pack. And try to rotate without moving the lens up and down too much.
