Looks fast!

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

From the Rolex 24 Saturday night. Cranked up the ISO and panned, panned and panned some more. I think I did ok considering my panning practice has been at this race two years in a row and never at night.

Night panning has to be the hardest for me...I can pan all day at just about any SS I want...but at night, I dunno, I get all shaky and can't hold still...

Saturday night was my first try at night panning and I probably wouldn't have even attempted it but earlier in the day I was sitting next to a Nikon shooter in the grandstands exiting the int. horseshoe. I mentioned to him that I didn't have any fast tele lenses so usually when the sun goes down, I put the gear away.

He told me to just crank up the ISO, my body (1D III) would do fine and fire away. So I did and surprised myself with several keepers I felt good about. I will say that for every keeper I managed, there were 20 that were a fuzzed out ball of mush!

I was reading a thread where a member described his technique of keeping his arms more or less locked with his elbow against his chest/stomach and pivoting his whole body at the waist. So that's what I attempted and came out with a few good ones.

The Nikon guy was a pro and he was sitting there with a ridiculously huge 500mm 2.8 prime on a monopod in front of him in the stands. The comments from those around us were pretty funny.

I got better results when I went back to manual focus instead of trying to use AF.

That might have been me...sounds like something I would say...I tend to coil up my body in the direction the car is coming from, and have my desired shooting point be where my shoulders area aligned with my hips so that there is no tension in my upper body.

I wonder if that was Foster Peters or maybe Camden Thrasher...was it a younger guy, well, they both look like a kid really!
