Kudos for the 1/20th, that's excellent and a really good, sharp picture that conveys great speed. But why would you be using AF tracking? Surely just a small aperture, say f/11, and pre-focusing where you know the car will be would do the job. Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

To answer your question...the a9 just got a big firmware update...and one of the pieces of it is the new AF Tracking system...and I wanted to try it out, to learn it...learn it when it doesn't matter so that if and when I am shooting this kind of thing and it does matter, I know how or when to use it...and I learned for race cars, it is not better than my old way of doing it...f/11 would have yielded 1/80 of a second, and while that shows good speed...I like the challenge of shooting at 1/20 for a few frames...and I don't use MF for a few reasons, my eyes are terrible, and I like to be able to have the option of keeping AF, just in case I need to be ready to capture something in a different location, maybe the car spins or there is a crash...having options... I see. I hadn't looked at your aperture. F/22 even easier to prefocus, but I understand your reasons for trying new AF. I've been seeing some sensational photos from a9s. Tracking must already have been good on it. Some of Sha Lu's bird photos, for example, are gobsmacking. Looking forward to more of yours. Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

A CPL or an ND filter can really help with exposure on slow pans on a sunny day. yep, I own both...but at the moment they are packed somewhere away in my house...been doing a major reno this year and my stuff is all over the place...
