Curious, what was your "keeper rate" of the shots you took in this section shot at 1/100? Asking, because at this shutter speed my capture is very low, I would guess less than 10 percent. Trying to gage how much I need to improve upon my technique.

My keep rate on an MX track is only about 10%...and that's if I can find a relatively smooth section. On a paved track, it's about 30%. See https://photography-on-the.net …showthread.php?​p=19267263
A number of factors come into play: speed of the target, focus area setting, and back-button shooting (or not).

Target speed: The faster the target is moving, the farther away I have to stand to keep it stationary in the frame. For bikes moving at over 100 mph, I set my lens to 300mm and position myself accordingly. The above shot was taken at 120mm because I couldn't back up any farther without putting myself in danger. I would have preferred about 200mm.

Focus area setting: I've tried them all, but Sony's "Zone" and "Zone w/Tracking" work the best for me. There's very little difference in keeper rate, but Zone w/Tracking seems to work slightly better.

Back-button focusing is a big factor. I can get the target in focus and start following it well ahead of when I press the shutter. I shoot at 10 fps because even though my A1 will do 30, I just don't want to have to sort through so many images.

When its on F18 for example, i go to manual.
DOF is most of the time big enough for where i want the shot to happen.

Choose a flat part off the track, or where they get airborne.
