Ah, one more lens you should consider if you decide against going with the kit lens: the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 DC Macro. Apparently it's capable of focusing on subjects that are right up next to the lens! Here's a good thread on it:

Some people there seem to think it's even sharper than the Sigma 24-70 f/2.8. It's not f/2.8 from end to end but it reportedly has excellent image quality.

Canon: 2 x 7D, Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS, 55-250 IS, Sigma 8-16, 24-105L, Sigma 50/1.4, other assorted primes, and a 430EX.
