Finally working on images taken in April...

The Jason Forrest Band (external link) (Formerly known as D.O.N.N.A. S.U.M.M.E.R.) visited Atak, with the Dutch band Zea (external link) as support act.

All images Here (external link)

Zea remains one of the most active bands I've seen on stage. Jason Forrest did a good try to be more energetic... The 1D2 AF had trouble keeping up sometimes.

Lighting was pretty harsh / uneven, so most shots are a blend of 2 to 3 exposures....

#1: Zea:

Keytar, air guitar...what is going on! I think 4 and 5 are really cool. These guys look hilarious though, I love #8...classic.

Well now... These are really great... Sharp and well lit, for that added depth... The stage action is amusing and must have been derived from a substantial number of shots?...

This is probably one of the very best sets we've seen this year...

Thanks!

On the 'substantial number of shots': I've selected 55 usable ones out of approx 370 (last one in the gallery is about the last capture: The band had stopped playing.)

Not too bad a keeper ratio I'd think: 1 in 7

Yea, 1 out of seven is pretty good...

I expect a minimum of 5 to 10 out of a 100 composition capture attempts...

What I mean by that is... I've decided to commit the shutter to fire at a specific scene (this also happens bracketed)... thereafter I don't stop shooting at the selected scene till I'm satisfied that I've captured the moment, in at least one of the bracketed shots...

With film, it was 1-2 or 3 out of a roll of film... When I shot as a Naturalist for the State of PA (1974+), that expected result was confirmed by the State's Chief Naturalist... It took the fear of non performance out of shooting macro, etc... At first I thought they would expect 1 out of 3 or 1 out of 5...

I was sure I commented on these? Somewhere else? Love #5 and #7! #4 pity the guitar head is cut off. #6 looks more like he was having a seizure!

Same concert, different images (allthough 5 was there), different forum ;)

On the guitar head: Not too sure. I think I'ld crop it off if I hadn't allready framed it this way. Adds nothing but empty space in the right... (Having the choice would have been nice though).

I was a bit close with the 50mm. Below is the series of four shots I took between 21:41:35 and 21:41:36 ;)
Second shot has the guitar, but not the expression (or focus)...

Do you shoot all your concerts in raw ?

#1 is front focussed a bit actually: It was impossible to focus on the guy behind the keyboard, so I focussed on the back of the keyboard. Which was just a bit too close ;) There is also a bit of subject motion blur (1/125s wasn't fast enough to stop that...)

Yep, everything is shot RAW. Great to recover blown highlights (to an extent) and adjust WB to taste...
Last time I switched to jpg was halfway (external link) during a festival, as I was running out of storage space. (iPod batteries had died).

I wouldn't... It's only good as a last option: Painfully slow (2Gb; about 20 minutes with Belkin CF adapter. That's USB1. Very silly, since the iPod photo supports both FW and USB2) Very short battery life (about 4Gb worth) Doesn't display CR2 files (just an icon), only jpg.

There are better, faster options.

Awesome Rene.

3 & 4 are definate fav's here.

I agree about the headstock chopping on 4. That image seems to be the best of the lot.

hey rené, good set as always; it's fun when a band is up there just having a blast. makes taking photos that much easier. i like 7 the best. actually, they are all good, but imo #4 suffers a bit from washed out light, esp in his face.

Firstly 4 5 6 and 7 are my personal favs, and i think they are truly awesome, with well i cant really pick between 4 or 5, which i think is the winner, i love the emotion in No.4 and all the dust in the air, just superb, and in No.5 well for one she is hot, and to you have managed to capture a perfect picture, with her perfectly in focus, but her hair flowing.crackin shot.

Overall a great set, with the Rene Damkot feel to them.
awsome buddy!

Cheers

James....
