i just bought this lense for my rebel xt and it takes great pictures when it focus on what i want but thats rarely the case. is this lense known to have a bad autofocus feature.. manual focus is still great and top notch, but i'd like it to auto more than 10% of the time.

input?

it seems to me that sometimes i can get too close with mine and it won't focus. i think this lens needs a bit of room to work. if that makes sense.

Are you shooting wide open at f1.8? At what distance from camera to subject? In what lighting conditions? What type of subjects are you trying to focus on? Any sample pics?

I almost always go manual with mine. Autofocus either searches too much or just plain misses focus. I get better control without it anyway so...

I always found the focussing rather hit and miss if the light levels were anything other than 'bright'.

Me too! I don't care how cheap it is. If you can't trust it to focus it is no good to me. I sent it back and got the 1.4.

^ I did the same thing, the 1.8 was just to inconsistent for me

I sold mine just a couple weeks ago. I too found the AF to be a bit finicky at times, even outdoors on a sunny day. I also didn't care much for the FOV it gave me on a 1.6x crop camera. It just felt a bit too tight.
