The Osprey were amazing.. never have I been so close.. and in 6 hours I witnessed more dives than I had in a lifetime.

What a blast!

Damariscotta Mills, Maine :P

I was in the bushes, hiding from the cool photographers and taking notes on their techniques !

My pick is the second shot! It really shows how fast those suckers are. A bird that leaves a trail in the air when you take pics of it a 1/1000 secs.... you don't see that every day !

The other pictures are really nice as well ! I hope to be at that level one day.
I gotta get a longer lens too... Until I have enough money to buy me that 70-200mm 2.8L, the only way for me to get pics like that is dress as a fish and swim in the river... hope that one osprey will considder me the prey ! And hope he won't eat me :P

Excellent shots CDS. Very good collection of shots that show the hunting life of the Osprey. No need for words, perfect.

Also talk to Outdoor Photography (here in the UK), they would love a series of shots like this. Email Keith Wilson at: keithw@thegmcgroup.com (external link) with some small sized JPEGs and some words. They fees are pretty good for an article. :)

Cheers

Ian

Thanks!

Wow,.. thanls a lot guys.

It was such a blast the whole day.

Scott was the perfect host and travelling companion.. (he did ALL the driving! Thanks again Scott) The day was perfect, the weather was perfect,. our timing was perfect.. I just can't imagine lucking into a situation like this more than a few times in a lifetime.

"Nick" who is a resident of the Area made it all possible for us by being so generous with the information and location. We love Nick.. even if he does shoot Nikons!!! :x 8)
***************
Controlz,
Thanks.. no I don't shoot professionally.. yet.. but I was just saying to Scott in one of our many on the raod conversations that I think I could really enjoy sports photography despite not knowing a thing about sports... ?!

***************
Gareth,
Thanks, it's one of my favorites for sure.. I think I may try reprocessing and desaturate the background??? or would that be too "gimmicky" ?

***************

Skipper.. it was in Maine..

***************

cmM,
Yeah what he said..
The blur on the second shot was actually there.. (do to my panning down I guess?) but I did "exagerate it a bit" with some PS work...

You are NOT kidding about the speed though... at the end of the day, I had only a single shot of one actually hitting the water.. which was the shot I longed for above all else.. and the one I got is trash.. totally out of focus (I amy post it still...) They dive so fast that catching the impact is near impossible!

As far as reach.. yes you would need at least 200mm.. in fact I did use a 70-200mm on the 10D but it had 1.4X mounted... but for the most part I used the 500mm.

***************
Thanks Lazy!
Do you really think they'd be interested?

***************
Scott,

You're right,.. we've got to figure out a way to get back there... but I just can't imagine we'll be so lucky a second time...

***************
Thank you Ian,
Again.. you really think I could get published?

***************
Thanks Frank!
High praise indeed!

***************
Hey Charles,
Yes the MkII is really living up to being a "dream camera"
***************
Thanks Jerry!

Seriously, yes. Outdoor Photography carries articles from all over the world, either landscape or wildlife (basically outdoors stuff). I could easily see these pictures on a three page article but would need some words.

Having looked at Scott's shots as well (nice captures Scott :)) maybe you could collaborate on an article, but get some words down while it is still fresh in the mind.

But email Keith (who I should have said, is the Editor) first with some JPEGs and a brief outline of the whole event, and someone will come back to you fairly quickly with a yes or no.

Worth a try. :)

Cheers

Ian
