I downloaded Virtual Painter 5 and gave it a whirl. While not nearly as sophisticated as some other techniques discussed here, it is very easy to use. I was pleased with the results. Here are a few examples, what do y'all think? All of these have been cropped to fit a 16x20 print size.

I downloaded the trial version. Indeed it is very easy to use. Here is my daughter.

What settings did you use?

Best regards,

Simon

I don't remember the specific settings for each, just played around. The first one is a oil painting and the next two are Gouache. Also I created a focus point around the faces to preserve some detail.

Heh, funny I hadn't noticed. Actually for some reason Virtual Painter thought it was a landscape rather than portrait orientation. I did the rotate later, henche the "paint" going in the wrong direction. Guess I need to do the rotate first, huh!

Just as an FYI to anyone who's interested, I had these three images printed on 16x20 stretched canvas and they turned out really nice. It's cool because they look more like artwork and I like the effect. Just using this easy program is a good way to start, but I'd also like to try some of the more advanced techniques that people have been discussing. Since I'm a die hard Paint Shop Pro user I wouldn't be able to try the DVD that's discussed in a different thread, but might be taking the jump to trying out Corel Painter to see what it offers.

I downloaded Painter X and never used it before...I too am a longtime PSPro user and figured the PhotoShop techniques on the DVD's that Mr. Buttrey is offering could apply, but haven't made the jump to buy yet.

A few questions:

1.) I wanted to know, do you resize the original photo to a smaller size before working in Painter...maybe it's the PC I'm on, which has alot of RAM, but found with a mouse anyway, the brush motions were uncontrollable, many time if I held down left button and drug it, it would just continue on in the direction it started and not stop for a awhile, ending with a trail I didn't want.

2.) Do you use a mouse or tablet, if the latter, what do you use?

3.) When working on a photo, did you have to constantly adjust your tools, sizes, etc. to get the real look of a painting.

Thanks.

DC~

From the questions you're asking, it sounds like you are trying Corel Painter. I was using a very simple program called Virtual Painter that automatically does the painting for you. There are a few settings you can tweak, but you don't do anything with dragging brushes and so on. Basically just tell it what type of painting/drawing, what type of paper or canvas, etc. and click Go.

I think it does a decent job, considering how simple of a program it is. Of course, what you gain in simplicity, you give up in control and flexibility. But it's fun to play with. I had some stretched canvas prints done that turned out nice.
