Humph, got a few shots of a heron in flight. At the very end of the range of my lens (canon 75-300 with x2), ah well at least it's recognisable. (mutter, mutter, lens envy, mutter mutter;) )

Only posted one

Great shot, I have a similar one as he passed overhead, but the camera was still attached to the tripod so it came out all fuzzy! I do have a couple that keep landing to look at the fish in my pond and the best opportunity, unfortunately missed as I didn't have the camera sat next to me, was when he sat on the fence about 20 feet away with his wings up! I love these birds, I am quite happy if the occasional £1.50 goldfish disappears as I don't want to net the pond!

There are wildlife preserves where herons are much more approachable. Where I live, even in the parks the herons and egrets tend to be skittish and unapproachable, but visiting Fort De Soto near Tampa, FL, for instance, I have had GBH, Reddish Egrets, Tricolored Herons, Little Blues, etc. all that I could have actually petted on the head I think if I'd wanted. I certainly was able to get so close to several GBH that all I could get with my 300mm (even with the TC removed) I was barely able to get hust a headshot.

It can be a lot of fun to visit places like that and create some really nice shots without having to drool over the really long lenses. :)

True, but drooling and wishing is fun too  the animals at the the wildlife place are more approachable, the herons were just too far off really
