Is this shutter failure or just the curtain?

1. The good pic right before it happened.

2. You can see the streak started.

3. You can see the curtain could fully open

4. Another one from outdoor.

I tried with both the 85/1.8 and the 24-70 and got the same thing.

When I looked at the shutter, I could see that curtain was hanging low at one corner and i turned that camera upside down and give it a little tap and it fell back in place. But the streak still there.

The third picture looks like what i would describe as a shutter failure (from seeing images in the past.) Mine has not failed but i would assume that you are going to have to take it in... Ive never seen the streak before but good luck getting it fixed.

I agree, this looks just like some of the pictures posted with defective shutter.

If the shutter's moving about when you tap the camera I think there's a good chance something's gone wrong :p

Looks like you're getting the issue at both fast and slow shutter speeds. When my shutter went I was getting an over-exposed streak in my photos as well, but in horizontal orientation it was right at the very top of the image, and it was noticeable only at shutter speeds faster than about 1/500s or so. Below 1/100s it was hardly visible.

A shutter change won't be too expensive, so there's nothing to worry about unless you're tight on finances.

Luckily it won't cost you much. Cheap repair and you can soldier on for another 150,000 shots after that.

Thanks guys. The camera has about a little over 10k shots or so.

I'll contact Canon and see. The thing the friend where I bought the camera from couldn't find the box, will Canon accept it without box and paper?

Also do you also include the battery when you send it in?

No battery and certainly not the oem box. Make a trip to your local UPS store and get a 1foot sq box and some bubbly.

Thanks Jason, I'm packing it up. Darn Monday is Memorial weekend :(

Also I just found out that my cousin is heading down near Irvin Repair center on Tuesday and I'm thinking of sending the camera with him for dropping off with a cd full of images and a letter.

Has anyone done this before? Dropped of their camera and had Canon shipped back?

Another pic of the streak. It's not uniform from shot to shot. I bursted about 6-7 shots and the it was not the same in all the shots.

That happened to be before when I had the 1DN. I had no idea what it was. It went away after a day and I took the camera out for many outings after that and never saw it again.

If you drop off your camera at Canon Irvine, they usually can give you an estimate of how much time it will take. Usually it will only take a few days and you will have your camera back within a week if not sooner.

Sadly - yes, this looks like shutter failure, from what I've seen.

To be honest, this is why I dislike the MTTF crap - Canon might rate it to 150k shutter actuations, but they certainly won't guarantee it, which in all honesty, I think they should do. Others won't agree with me here, but I consider Canon's statement of MTTF 150k false and misleading advertising.

Canon can avoid this easily by offering a normal warranty for the whole camera, and a guarantee that the shutter will last what they designate as the reasonable MTTF - of course, they'd never do this, because they exist to solely make money and keep the shareholders happy.

Good luck getting it fixed.

Dave

Canon has told me some fail at 10K some at 300K. They say if it lasts past 80k you have a good one.

True? Who knows.

80k is a LOT less than the MTTF value of 200k for the 1D Mark IIn though Jason, and that's my entire point. I'd be very disappointed if I bought a new 1D Mark IIn, had it for 14 months (and thus is out of warranty) and had the shutter fail at 20k shots!

I wonder if Nikon has similar rates of failure - does anyone know???

Maybe I wasn't clear. If you make it to 80k without a failure, you'll likely go FAR beyond that. Father than the rated 150K. The early failures bring the average down.

Considering they made the camera very servicable and the minimal cost, I'd only be pissed about the down time.
