I recently dug these out of the archives and recently posted them in the Post Your Most Convincing DSLR pic thread. I don't shoot sports hardly if ever, but thought I'd put my 1D2N and 70-200L IS to use during a home football game at the university last season. What started out to be a very light drizzle ended up being a really heavy drizzle and then all out rain. I managed to squeeze off a few frames before packing it in since I didn't have my camera raincoat with me. Neverthess, the gear managed to get thoroughly drenched. This is my first time posting images in Sports, so please take it easy on my virgin ass. All critiques and comments welcome.

Thanks! I'm currently working at BSU, so I have plenty of opportunities to shoot sports, but really haven't taken advantage of the fact. I live near the Bowie Town Center as a matter of fact. ;) I'm not looking for a job per se, just guaging the audience to see if I have what it takes to be a sports shooter.

If i lived in a city that was heavy on sports I'd be all over this. My city is full of lazy fat kids and a half assed football team. The town is RABID about lacrosse and soccer but the local shooter have that all locked up.

If you can get in, do it. Shoot and sell like mad.

Ed,

# 1, # 2 , # 3 & # 5 are all excellent.

# 4, I think we need to be able to clearly see the eyes of the defender for it to really work and the focus is on the receiver. Good idea, but it just didn't turn out. The shot also needs leveling and I would have liked to see the whole scoreboard (something to consider when framing a shot like that). It's the details that make some shots just stand out.

# 6 is a near miss as the timing is just plain too late. The ball is too far removed even though it is an interesting pose :) . A defender nearby would have helped it too as opposed to a single player kicking a ball in the rain.

I'm not in a position to hire you, but I'd certainly say that you are more than capable should someone have the need.

BTW: I'm not taking it easy on you as you are clearly beyond that stage. You have some really nice shots there, especially considering the circumstances. Well done.

Regards,
Jeff

Thanks, Jeff! I will take all of your helpful advice into consideration. ;)

I'll definitely be getting out there a lot more during the home games. I'll also be out there shooting hoops, girls softball and track and field next year as well. Thanks a bunch, guys. Hopefully, I'll be able to share some more in this forum starting next Fall semester.

No. :(

I guess it's off to the business forum to get some tips and pointers there. I sort of like the idea of LM Photography though. hmmmm....

Skill wise, I would absolutely say you have the skills to do what ya need to do. A couple of the shots are a tad over sharpened (it's showing up in the grass), but the timing and all else looks about right for the equipment you were using. So yeah, I am sure you could deliver good enough shots for a Division II school. Expectations from a Div 1 school is you would likely need a 300 or a 400 to get the expected shots at that level of play, but still not required. And I am sure you would do just fine there as well. My only cautionary note would be that you left because of some rain. As someone who does this all the time, you dream about games like this. I am so tired of sun shinny games, I could hurl sometimes. If I got a game like this, you would have to drag my soaked arse off the field before I would go home. I would find a plastic bag or anything to keep over my equipment so I could keep shooting. Images from games like this are the ones that will get an editor to stop and take a look. And I know you have what it takes to stick in there when things get tough. So I just wonder if you have the motivation to want to do something like sports photography. There is no right or wrong answer here. It is just that it does get repetitive, and you got to really love what your doing to keep the excitement showing in the images. Otherwise, it will be come just a job... and it will kill the fun of photography.

Hope I didn't cross any lines here. The skills are there, is the heart willing is the question.

Lord M, you are definately worth hiring!!! You will be successful in any endeavor you try photographically because you work at it. There are many people on this forum whom I have great photographic respect for despite not meeting them....you are amongst them. How about letting the forum name your new sports business??? Poll???
