I sat down yesterday with my new HP Photosmart Pro B8350 and I intended to have a "get aquainted session" and print my very first batch of photos with it. Even though the printer installed without a hitch and printed excellent test pages from the windows and HP software, it refused to print photo images! It goes through all the normal print dialogs and when I finally hit the print button the little printer icon appears in the Windows taskbar as it normally does, but then it suddenly disappears. The printer does not take up the paper from either the tray or by manual feed and there's no print job in the printer queue. And no error messages either.

I tried printing through Photoshop, Lightroom and directly through Windows XP. Same non-result each time. Going back to running a test print, it prints out a beautiful print every time with sharp images and rich color. And it continues to have no problem with text documents.

The end of this boring story is that I went online with HP support and after they had me run through all the same diagnostics I had already done on my own, they agreed that it is defective hardware and they are sending me a replacement. I'll keep you guys posted.

BTW... This is a brand new unit, not a refurb.

Be careful about that. I had an issue with one of their laser printers so they sent me one to replace my DOA printer. When I got it, I got a refurbished printer that was clearly used fresh with coffee stains in the cracks. The lady on the phone did not tell me that it would be refurbished so I was less than pleased when I recieved the replacement. I immediately got on the phone and told the representative about the situation. I spoke with her manager and told him that if I wanted to to purchase a refurbished printer, I wouldn't have paid the price of a new printer. Long story short, it took three exchanges back and forth to get the whole situation resolved.

Personally, I'd have returned a DoA printer to the retailer for the reasons Goonish mentions. If HP replace a printer, you get a refurb.

My six month old B9180 died - you can read the whole saga over in the photo-i forums here (external link).

I've returned two HP printers to the store and have sent two back to HP under warranty. Neither were the same as yours.
