Does anyone have problems with flare with this lens? My copy seems to flare quite easily when shooting landscape. And would you recommend buying a third party hood? The Canon ET-67 hood costs 3 times as much as the third-party hood. Thanks.

My one is very well controlled for flare but you should always use a hood for all lenses. Get the specified Canon hood, it is large and well designed.

Who knows, considering how much one pays for camera and lenses why mess around, just get the Canon hood.

Yes, it's true, get the original one, you'll have what exactly fit the lens needs...
Genuine is often the best way to avoid problem.

Of course this hood is a bit expensive, but very well bild, the inside is covered with special material that will avoid sun bean reflection...

So, go for the ET-67. You have a good lens, so get the best gear for it ;-)a

Ciao,
Laurent.

Buy the Ebay hood. It fits fine and works well. This is a case where you don't need the name brand.

It appears that I am the only one that has one of the Ebay hoods that has commented so far. The Ebay hood is obviously a copy of the ET-67. I see no difference in 'build quality' between the two Ebay hoods I purchased at a third the cost of Canon and the hoods that came with my two L lenses and the DO. Both have nice snug fits to the lenses in both normal and inverted modes. It takes a little longer to get them, but they are sent registered mail so they don't get lost. I believe they will give good service for a long time. The other Ebay hood I bought was for the 50f1.4. Again, simply good value, IMHO.

Mel can you confirm for the OP if the inside of the hood is flocked.

I bought the ebay 100mm lens hood. It seems from the outside to have the excact same dimensions as the real thing and feels reasonably solid and well made. The inside of the hood is smooth flat black plastic. Slightly different from the exterior finish. I bought another ebay hood for my 10-22 and the inside has this felt like finish. My tamron lens hood has grooves on the inside. I am not sure if it makes makes much of a difference but I couldn't see spending 3X more for a piece of plastic. Honestly I would be very surprised if a side by side performance comparison would show any differences.

If I remember correctly the front element of the lens is very exposed and at the end of the lens barrel. Many other macros have a bit of the lens barrel that extends past the front element. Because of this design, it may be more prone to flare.

I do agree that a hood is recommended, also if you have a UV filter, I'd take that off as well as UV filters may increase flare.

Good luck.

Do you need a food for this lens?

I am getting it as I ditch my 18-200OS (a very ****ty lens).

But I dont think it'll need a hood ...............

I think the 60 macro is the best macro lens for product phototos and street photos but the 100 is the best for many other things like insects and head shots...

But when will you need a hood on the lens?

Sathi, any pic of the 100mm hood to show us? Which ebay dealer? Thanks.

Mine also does not have a flocked interior. However the Ebay hood I bought for the 50 1.4 is flocked on the inside. They came from different HK vendors, and I do remember the ad for the 50 1.4 mentioning the flocking. These vendors are normally pretty responsive to questions. By all means send them a question using Ebay's system and ask before you buy if it has fuzz on the inside surface. I'm sure you'll know one way or the other before you buy.

That is not ideal better than nothing but the inside should be flocked to be fully effective.

Yes the front element is not recessed.
