I dont know if im in the right section but i was wondering how many of you have taken the plunge from a pc to a mac? Is it an easier time working with photos? I rarely do anything other than photoshop, and internet explorer. I do use photo browser that came with the canon 20d. I was looking into a MacPro 2.33. It seems to be more graphics friendly compared to the pc. That may just be some ingenious marketing. What do you guys think? Ive only used a Mac twice in my life, and not long enough to say yah or nay. Thanks.

There are not problems. I was just in the market for a laptop. I find myself borrowing a pc laptop all the time. I usually take it to events where i either have to print on the spot or burn cd's for customers.

The same software should give you essentially the same performance on similarly-spec'd machines.

I rarely do anything other than photoshop, and internet explorer.

No IE on Macs. Just Safari and Firefox (which are more secure than IE, but there are a few sites that only recognize IE).

I do use photo browser that came with the canon 20d. I was looking into a MacPro 2.33. It seems to be more graphics friendly compared to the pc.

If the hardware is the same, then the performance should be about the same. One advantage Macs have is built-in calibration software (ColorSync) that has a bit of a learning curve, but can get very good results. I broke down and bought a Spyder2, but I can manually calibrate almost as well using ColorSync. The Mac also includes iPhoto, which is an elementary photo editing and database program that can import and open your 20D raw files. Of course, the Canon software will work, too.

That may just be some ingenious marketing. What do you guys think? Ive only used a Mac twice in my life, and not long enough to say yah or nay. Thanks.

Well, if your current machine is doing the job there's probably no reason to switch. If your machine isn't doing what you need, then you might consider switching. If you decide you don't like the Mac, you can always install XP Pro SP2 or Vista on the Macs natively and run it under those OS's. The Macs are also less configurable than PCs from the larger vendors, such as Dell, but they also come with highly integrated productivity software.

If you do get a new computer, you should get a Core 2 Duo processor (or AMD equivalent) and 2 gigs of RAM (don't buy RAM from Apple, they're really expensive).

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

This is one hell of a heated debate that has raged for years. But I must say that you don't tend to hear many people who have switched to Macs from PCs and regretted it. They tend to say that "they've seen the light"
On that note I'll leave this conversation behind....good luck in your choice.

Ya think? Photoshop and surfing are the same experience on either in my books. Is it REALLY worth the hassle of switching over (depreciation, new software, transferring licenses etc.) or is it that you want something new and shiny that the ladies will coo over?

Ask yourself is it worth the cost. If it is, then enjoy your Mac experience. If having different buttons to do the same work in CS3 is not worth the cost of a new box and the aforementioned, then be happy with your PC.

Mac has no graphics processing advantage. Neither does PC. Some Macs have little graphics memory, some PCs have craptastic video cards installed.

Quality PCs do have a small price advantage.

I had Mac. Went PC. Others had PC, went Mac. Don't let Mac marketing fool you though. Research your purchase. If I were to go Mac, I'd own a 24 inch iMac and stuff it full of ram. If I were to win the lottery and build some 10 core 20 GB of ram super death box, I'm not so sure what I'd do.

What else would you say after spending $4000 on a laptop? :) sorry, I couldn't resist.

Tony-S said it perfectly.

Mac does have some ingenious marketing. I love thier commercials even though I heckle most of them.

I'm not for or against either, it's a chevy/ford debate that has no winner.

I regretted it! (especially the money it cost!) But you can still say I "saw the light" :)

i started on the apple IIgs, and kept with apple until the 386DX came out, which was when I got a PC (only an SX though...)

so basically from mid 1990s - 2002 I was using only pcs and windows (from 3.0 - xp). Then when the dual G5 macs came out, I switched to them - plus I was doing audio and video, which I heard macs were great for.

Within 6 months I had switched back to PC, and haven't thought about it again ever since. I still use macs daily, but have no desire whatsoever to own one myself. Different strokes, I guess.

I see what everyone is saying. Its a nice looking machine. Both have thier ups and downs. I just wish they didnt depreciate so much. Thanks for the input.

ya, about depreciating - it just goes along with the technology.

my philosophy is to get something good enough to last 5+ years. I've had the same desktop PC since 2003 - replaced the video card a few times, been through a few sticks of memory, etc. still ticking great as ever - and surprisingly enough, in the past 4 years there still isn't much that can surpass my 2.8 with HT and 4gb of ram.

The whole Mac marketing scheme is quite embarrassing and annoying even to Mac users. Im always on the go so I like using laptops. Ive been using PC laptops for almost 10 years now and recently got a Macbook Pro. Being able to run Windows on my Mac was pretty much the selling point. Im glad I made the switch because this is the best, and most reliable machine ive ever used. OSX also kicks ass, and I rarely even really need to run Windows.

Actually Chevy is better but Toyota owns all officially being way ahead of Ford in trucks alone.

Moving on. I'll keep it simple. Unless your a vid editor, Macs are worthless. Let me rephrase that, there's no difference I've found. Specs are specs and Mac has setup for vids but photos there's nothing despite what everyone may say. You can ask anyone why and there's no reason.

Sure there's the monitor color adjuster and a default program? Um, it ain't PS so why bother if you got it or gonna get it. So yeah...I still don't understand this debate. They're both computers and it's the programs that make them up. Of course I will say, Vista sucks. Bothers me. I like my XP. And my comp was way less for the same specs on a Mac.
