since i always like to trail the mention of macs with my peanut gallery comments:

i have to say, that mac rigs for video are amazing. however, they are not regular mac rigs, they are custom built for video editing - and priced accordingly. the same amount of money could be spent on an even bigger pc rig...

although I can admit (albeit painfully) that I have had way less problems editing video on a mac, than on a pc.. but I also use pc more, thereby accounting for more problems

right? :)

Gosh, and it had been such a civilized dialog...

Moving on. I'll keep it simple. Unless your a vid editor, Macs are worthless.

Really? What makes you say that? If you go to TIGR (The Institute for Genome Research) you'll see that all their DNA sequencers are run by Macs. Same for the DoE sequencing centers. Also, did you know Macs can be connected by their gigabit ethernet ports to form superclusters? I mean, Macs are Unix boxes with a pretty face on top of them.

Let me rephrase that, there's no difference I've found.

Well, which is it? Are they worthless, or is there no difference?

Specs are specs and Mac has setup for vids...

The specs have nothing to do with it. A Windows PC (or even Linux boxes) can be just as good or better than a Mac for doing video editing. The hardware's all the same.

...but photos there's nothing despite what everyone may say. You can ask anyone why and there's no reason.

Who say's Macs are better than PCs at photo editing?

Sure there's the monitor color adjuster and a default program? Um, it ain't PS so why bother if you got it or gonna get it.

This sentence is ambiguous. Can you clarify?

So yeah...I still don't understand this debate. They're both computers and it's the programs that make them up. Of course I will say, Vista sucks. Bothers me. I like my XP.

Yes, Macs can run XP and Vista as well as any other PC.

And my comp was way less for the same specs on a Mac.

Perhaps it was, but if you compare similarly-equipped Macs and PCs, they're essentially the same price. What are the specs on your computer? Did you build it yourself, or did you buy it off the shelf or BTO?

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

I don't know which is better or worse, and really don't care.

My business is photography, web design,. and graphic design, and we run on mac, with a few PCs for checking web compatibility (that is about all they do).

With the new Intel Macs you can run windows on them if you want to, so maybe that is a plus.

Try them both and make your decision. No amount of specs or anything is going to do it for you.

That said, I love my Mac, I love Apple Cinema displays, but i love the cost of a PC.

Who knows...

Rob

Some Mac users find a need to run Windows on their machines.

I have yet to find a PC user(s) who needs to run OS X on his PC.

Just an observation. It's not really a two way street, but Mac users seem generally happier. Cult satisfaction or true user interface bliss is up for debate.

OK...lets answer the original question.

"I want a new laptop and I just surf the net and take pictures/process pictures and burn CDs what do I get a Macbook Pro or PC laptop?"

Assuming this will be a fairly stand-alone rig from your PC other than transferring photos I say get the Macbook Pro. Less hassle, less software hiccups and a much better operating system. Customer service is pretty much without equal as well.

Now...if you secretly desire speed speed speed. A firebreathing leg searing "desktop replacement" PC laptop is what you want. Just as with engines there is no replacement for displacement. You can buy a bigger faster PC laptop for the same money as a Macbook Pro and with more money you can buy one multiple times faster.

My recommendation only changes from Mac to PC if you want the speediest and a REPLACEMENT for your home PC. If you plan on keeping the home rig and are not going to be running three programs while using CS3 and layering like a madman I say Macbook Pro.

EDIT:
Oh...and if you do decide on a Macbook Pro.......wait about a month as I think announcements for updates to the Macbook Pro line are on the way. :)

Were you paying attention last week when there were 17 critical OSX vulnerabilites patched?

you can run osx on a pc... not sure why you would ever feel the need...

there's a program called pear - although it wont run osx natively, it's emulated. it's still osx nonetheless.

I'd own a 24 inch iMac and stuff it full of ram. If I were to win the lottery and build some 10 core 20 GB of ram super death box, I'm not so sure what I'd do.

I like this advise.....

I've owned a mac for the last ten years, I happen to do video on my box stock mac pro at home, as far as photography I loaded Aperture and CS3 on the macbook and maxed the ram for $99 and couldn't have been happier.($1300+software out the door) Some can get by with iPhoto and elements, After coming from final cut I knew I wanted the Pro app. Aperture has a wonderful RAW workflow. Everything I have plugged into this laptop has just worked, XTi, 40d, friends d80 and both my GL2 and XL1. Seems when I plug them into my pc here at work it freaks out and pops up a message saying "the drivers for this device were not found would you like to look for them online?" (BTW dell running XP SP2)
PCs can do what my mac does but they seem to need to be setup. My mac seems to "just do" everything I have asked it to. Just my experience.

Erik
