This lens is WIDE!!! Well.......its a fisheye so thats expected.

First impression with this lens is that it balances very well with my Rebel. THe front element curves out and is very prone to fingerprints/bumps if you're not careful. THe lens itself has a non-removable hood and is protected by a slip-on lens cover which stays on pretty well during storage.

Looking through my viewfinder - the world became a different place. It takes a little getting used to in the beginning but I started having a lot of fun with it as I started clicking away.

Focusing is pretty fast though a tad noisy........Something that doesn't really bother me (having previously experienced the 35 f2). It also handles flare very well (IMHO) and produces nice, sharp and contrasty photos stopped down to around f8-f11.

One novelty of owning this lens is that it does give your photo a different feel from your other lenses. It allows you to get very close to your subjects and still get a nice view around them.

..............I am in agony deciding between this lens and the 17-40 f4. In the end.........I made up my mind and decided on the 17-40. I think its more practical for my current line-up with some added versatility being that its a zoom. If I have enough money though (or maybe in the future), I will want this lens in my bag............I think it will add a different dimension to my photographs.

Well thats it...........thought I would share that with you guys :D

Fisheye lenses can create some pretty nice photos, from what I've seen. I most likely won't own one anytime in the near future, but I have been wanting to rent on for a while now. Just for a day, to play around with it.

You might also get the 16 mm MF Zenitar for about US$ 150 new if you really fancy fisheye lenses... there also is an 8 mm Peleng.

Best regards,
Andy

Take a look at the Tamron 14mm f2.8 SP. It is a rectilinear lens (not a fisheye), and it is, IMHO, a great lens. I got mine used from KEH, and they still have one at a good price. Check here:

I used it over the weekend (sorry, still no hosting site to post from), and I'm sold. The focusing is a little noisy, but I can live with that.

Have Fun,

Rick

Have Fun,

Ouch!!! 750 USD :-( Thats more expensive than the Canon fisheye or the Sigma 12-24. I was actually looking at the Sigma fisheye.....for around 449 USD.

Thanks for the heads up though.........I want to see your images from this lens........

The fisheye on the DRebel has that 1.6 factor to deal with. Here is an example of a full frame shot using an FD 15mm fisheye.

15mm FE--it can be defished also

I shoot a lot with a wide angle--so am fairly redundant in these lenses (15mm FE, 20mm, 15-30, 24-70, 35). I bought the FE because I decided it would be a good while until I owned a FF body and wanted a wider lens with the 1.6 crop (and did not want another zoom--like the 12-24). I sometimes leave the shot 'as is', but often defish it with Panorama tools--quite good. Here is an example not the same RAW file, but taken from approx. same viewpoint
