For those of you in the know what determines whether a lense gets a date code? I understand that the L's pretty much have them but am wondering where the coding stops and why? There are a few non L's out there that I would assume have a date code but am not sure....

regards,

john

Sorry I don't have an answer to your question, but I thought I would check my old lenses that are not "L."
I just got out my old 50mm 1.8 out of an old bag and it had the date code of UC0502, LOL, 1988. And I got out my 70-200mm F/4 and it had a date code of UBXXX, even funnier, 1987. Man 20 years old.

That is indeed funny.

Especially as the 70-200/4.0 L has not been made earlier than 1999, according to http://www.canon.com …m/camera/lens/f_lens.html (external link)

Best regards,
Andy
