When resizing your original images for websites and forums such as this one, it's important to know what resolution is the most popular so you can resize it to the maximum size possible.

I've been assuming most people are using 1280 x 1024 these days, but I wanted to check, hence this poll.

Thanks!

Another popular format (especially with Laptops) is 1280 x 768. Perhaps you should have listed that as one of the choices just to reduce the ambiguity.

But remember, people who process their own digital photographs are not representative of Internet users generally. According to this survey (external link), 1024x768 is still by far the most common resolution for Internet users generally.

My monitor it set to 1680x1050 but I generally post pictures that are either 800x600 or 900x600 since I prefer the widescreen format.

my monitor too is 1680x1050 and I usually post at 800 pixels on the longest edge.

I didn't realise there were so many variations! (forgot about the widescreen screens)

I can't edit the poll but it's useful to know there that most people use higher resolutions.

As you can see, many of us are using large widescreen monitors (I'm another with a 1680 x 1050 20 inch widescreen monitor).

However, few of us keep web browsers and the like maximised on these large monitors - also not everyone has a fast broadband connection. A further consideration is that the larger the image you post online, the more use it is to someone who decides to steal it.

For online use, somewhere between 640 and 800 pixels on the longest side is usually best. I tend to stick to 640 pixels on the longest side; it's enough for most purposes.

David

Good point, even though I run 1680 x 1050 I never have my browser window maximised, in fact the only program I run maximised is Lightroom.

2560 x 1600 for me.

Assuming an LCD monitor, the best resoultion to use is it's native resoultion.
