17 year Cicadas

Hello everyone, i was in Chicago for the Memorial day weekend.
Now im from California so forgive me if these bugs are boreing to you, but ive never seen them.
They come around every 17 years or so to basically shed their shells, mate, and die.

OMG, hundreds of them, we get caterpillars in the hundreds like that and I have seen them just about strip a tree bare!

I can't imaging how loud it is with that many of them.

Can you offer more explaination? I'm curious about with the pet thing.

really? because one of their primary purposes are to provide food for forest dwellers, and for nutrients in the soil upon their rapid death.

The bugs belong to the largest group, or brood, of periodical cicadas—insects that spend most of their lives as nymphs, burrowed underground and sucking sap from tree roots. They emerge once every 17 years, transform into adults, do the business of reproduction, and then die.

We had them here in the MD/DC area 3 years ago... in swarms... everywhere for 6 weeks. Their "song" pulsates and has an eerie alien sound that grows on you over the weeks. Miss the sound... do not miss having to dodge them just to walk out to get the post, though. LoL You could be driving down I95 and watch them move in cloud swarms, from tree to tree.
