I came across it suddenly. It was behind a rock and when it saw me, it froze long enough for me to get an upper body shot. I got a hasty photo of it flying away a few seconds later..

I'm not sure what it is.. I'm thinking it's an immature night heron of some sort.... We do have lots of black crowned night herons in this area..
