Boston Harbor Boat Cruise

Just a note - we still have more room on the boat if anyone new is still interested!

Want to take a photographic cruise of Boston Harbor, the islands, and the Charles River?

Noon to 6:00 PM

This boat is certified for 49 people, so there will be plenty of room to move around and take pictures.

Points Of Interest For Cruise

In a sense, I imagine leisurely hugging the Boston coast out to Little Brewster and/or World's End, scooting quickly to Deer Island, scooting to George's Island, and then leisurely past the airport and east Boston side, towards the Zakim, up the Charles, and back to base.

My thoughts/point to hit:
Zakim Bridge
North End
Boston skyline, various angles
Up close to Moakley Courthouse
Can we get down to the International Hotel? I think not.
Hug that "coast" down to the shipping terminal
Close to Fort Point
Around Fort Independent
Hang at the end of a runway for a bit. Plane shots?
Deer Island - that treatment station could be interesting
Little Brewster island & lighthouse
George's Island and Fort Warren (We could get off here for a bit)
Thompson Island (There's some old buildings there, right?)
Peddock's Island - there *are* some abandoned buildings here.
Bumpkin island has "a stone farmhouse and the remains of children's hospital" - but do we want to get off?
Squantum Marina may have some sailboats under way, slightly different view of the city.
Charles River, head up and turn around, plenty to see.

If you have any ideas, let us know.

Here's a map of the harbor islands, and lotsa info on them.

Cost
Cost will be $135 per person. This includes $10 a person to get Mumbles on for free. He's going out there on a day off to take pictures of this company's boats, which is what got us a very good price. He should not have to pay since he's doing the extra work to go out and shoot pictures, post-process, provide prints, etc.

I will need $75 in advance, payable to me. No refunds on deposit unless enough people add on to cover any losses I might incur. Anything extra will go towards a tip for the captain, or soda and munchies, or refunded. I am not at all interested in making a profit from this, I just want to go and not have it cost me $500 to do so. I do not need money yet. Let's call it July 1st due date for that.

What I do need is a list of people who will certainly make it, who will probably make it, and who will probably not make it. Please let me know how you land within those 3 specifications, and if you'll bring anyone else.

You can take my 100-400 L away when you pry it from my cold, dead fingers.

At $20 an hour, this is a rather sweet deal. I hope to see the usual faces as well as any newcomers... we are a no stress, no ego group. We just like to shoot, nothing more, nothing less. How often do you get a chance to chill on a yacht cruising around the harbor and charles?

:)

i have lived in this state since i was born and have never had the opportunity like this one. i rarely even venture into Boston:shock: , i know people pretty sad, huh!

This is one sweet deal, and the ship looks beautiful. 6 Hours on a private yacht with lots of elbow room shooting Boston...SWEET

We have full control of the boat dude! We can get up close, however close the boat can get. I'll be bringing everything from 17mm to 400mm, and expecting to use them all.

Besides, there's sure to be a spare lens from time to time. You might convince someone to loan you their precious 100-400mm L for a short time. (Um, OK, maybe the 100-300mm :-) )

That's all part of this type of get-together - checking out other gear, getting insight from someone who's been there done that, and generally having a good time with a bunch of like-minded people.

Just an example of what i've taken in around the harbor.... for those wondering what there may be to see...

Keep in mind, my pics were almost entirely limited to being on the ground. If we have free movement, the only limitation is yourself and your camera :)

Wow, everytime I take a small hiatus from this forum, I come back to something wild and fun - You guys/gals are great! :D

Is there still room? If so, let me double-check my schedule at work and try to get that date free!

Hiro - there's plenty of room! Let us know.

GMack - I'll probably just have everyone mail me a check. I work in the boonies - Boxborough. And, like with damoneboston, I think a P&S will do fine since we'll be able to go a lot of places. I plan to have the 28-75mm on most of the time.

Check out Mumbles' image. The first is probably 28-40mm, and we were as far away as you can possibly get - the other side of the harbor.

The 3rd one must be his 10mm. I'm jealous. Same with the last.

Check out those pics. Mumbles does not have a telephoto. I don't think any are longer than 50mm, and he's using a full-frame 5D so that's actual focal length.

Please put me down as a "certainly".

Unlike my fine bearded friend Mr. Khokhar, I have no in-laws to speak of and my wife and kids would love me to find some other subjects to photograph for a day instead of them. :)

ooooohh! This is very tempting! I'll have to get approval from my boss (aka "sweety") to take the day off from babysitting and yard work, but put me down for probably.

6 hours? Man, I'll need more memory. :)
