Thanks :) I tried it with black background as well, but that didn't quite work out. The 17-40L is darker than the background.

Interesting concept. I agree the first one is best.

how did you manage to light up the shot with the black background?
im currently working on a project and having difficulty lighting up a water filled clear bottle on a black background. i can clearly see that im not difusing my light enough per your examples.

Well, I put the white / black paper on a table that was in front of a large window with a white curtain (like a huge soft box), with just enough space in between that I could get the tripod with the camera.. However, as you can see from some of the reflections in the glass the area around the window was not 100% without clutter.

When I shot with the white background (I did that after the black), I put the black paper sheets on both sides just outside view from the viewfinder.

I used the same light for this shot https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=326659
and was very pleased with how diffused and soft it was.

I actually like the one with the black background better. I think it shows the contrast between the 4 glasses better.

Here's a great article regarding lighting black objects on dark/black backgrounds. Not a small subject in this case (Austin Healy), but the same concept nonetheless. From this month's Rangefinder mag .............
