I looked through the sticky, but in a quick hurry didn't see title that seemed to do this. I just purchased lightroom and trying to figure out all the features. I have always used dpp to convert my raw->jpg as it seems to be quicker and everybody says it is better. I was not a fan of the original cs2 converter. Ok, that being said, i see a develop button on lightroom. What does that do. It looks like i can edit pictures with WB and other tuning options.

here is my question. Is there a "Batch process" that will take my raw files and convert them to jpg??

Select the ones you want to convert, then either click the "Export" button in the Library module or File > Export Photos or Ctrl + Shift + E in Windows (not sure about Mac) in the Develop module.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

that makes sense!!! then I guess when you export, you can tell it which format. Is develope mode just a way to tune your pictures? then when you are done Tuning your pictures, then you can save them as what ever format you like. Also, when editing pictures in lightroom, is it altering the raw files at all or is it strictly non destructive and the edits you made will only show in lightroom?

again, thanks for the quick reply!

Yeah the "Library" "Develop" etc up top are modules. Library is basic editing and browsing while Develop is more extensive editing. RAW files are never edited directly. As far as I know, there are no programs that edit the RAW itself. They all use sidecar files containing the edit information. Open up the same RAW in DPP (came with your camera) and you will see that LR edits are viewable only in LR, and DPP edits are only viewable in DPP. The changes are applied to the Exported file for use in other applications such as Photoshop.

Why are you converting to JPEG? Are you converting every file? I ask this question because LR isn't designed to just convert your RAW files. I only convert to JPEG when I need to post an image on the web, email, or print to a lab. Otherwise I do all my editing in LR and print from within LR.

Also, I suggest you go back to the stickies and look for some tutorials that will aid you in understanding the design of LR. There are some great tutorials out there.

Hmm well I can't speak for the OP but I convert to JPEG to finalize in Photoshop. Any differences from a TIFF that I've ever noticed is negligible but JPEGs are far more managable. I don't shoot JPEG because I still want the flexibility I get from RAW.

Rght, and this is a valid reason. But previously one would have to convert all RAW images to edit them. If he is just shooting RAW, converting them to JPEG and editing in Photoshop then he is missing the purpose of both RAW and LR.

With my RSP workflow (which I am still working out in LR) I converted every image - mainly because I upload them all to smugmug ( partly as offline backup).

In LR, I still intend to Export every image to JPG (although I won't re-import those Jpgs into LR - no point) for smugmug upload. I *try* not to use PS in my workflow!

OK gotcha.

Then here is what you need to do:

First, do you use actions or batch processing in PS? If so you should create a droplet (do a search on how to so this) to run when you export your images from LR.

Do all your editing in LR.
Go to the Library module and select the images you want to export.
Click Export.
Now, setup a custom output so that you can continue to use it over and over. If you created a droplet make sure you select that in the last dropdown menu. To do this make your changes and then save it by using the top drop down menu. It make take you a couple of tries to get everything setup the way you like it (at least it did for me).
