i guess spring is a rough time of year for birds... some of them really look like they've been through a wringer.

I cheat. I put branches over the railing of our back deck (tied to the railing, actually) then scatter bird seed along the rail. The birds land there on their way down to the railing, and I wait in the kitchen with a 400mm pointed at the perch. Ta-DA! The trick is to change the perch every day or so, that way you're not shooting the same stick every time. Give it a try, it's a great method to get closer to your subject, and that's the secret.
