Dear friends
Today some one came up to me and asked me he got a file from a 6 MP camera which is resized to 1200pixel x 1800 pixel and now he wants the same file to be printed on a 12 inches x 18 inches papers. I asked him for the original but it seems he dont have it.

Can you please tell me if some one resize a file which is 1200 x 1800 pixel @ 300 dpi to 12 inches x 18 inches @ 300dpi in PS and then go for 12 x 18 inches print. Will it be very pixelated that no point in doing that!!

Thanks
Ghosh

It would certianly be easier if you had the orginal file - is this a file that he took? The image you have is set to print at a 4x6 image size at 300 dpi. If you want to print it at 12x18 you could crop it to that size in PS at 300dpi and PS will interpolate so the density is correct. Whether it is acceptable depnds on may factors - I think the only way you will know is to try it. Good luck, Dennis

I don't think you will need to print it at 300dpi, maybe 200 dpi will do. This means you only have to double your pixels rather than triple. ;)

However, give it a try. Open the file, go to Image > Image size and change the dpi to 200, then change the size to 12 x 18, making sure the Resample Image box is checked. See what the pic looks like. You could then even crop a small section and print it on a 4x6 to proof what it prints like.

Thank you but I think you did not get my point. I have file which 4x 6 inches and now I want to resize ( enlarge) it in PS and print at 12 x 18 inches.Thats almost 3 times the original size.

Please tell me will the printed picture be very disturbing and also tell me will 200 dpi will be enough?

Thanks very much for helping me.

Hi Ghosh, I don't know any way to answer your question for sure without printing the image. How good it will be depends on the nature of the image.

Nope, I got your point just fine. I even told you what I would do in your situation. The only way to know if it wil work or not is to try it.

Usually a sharp image printed at 100ppi will look fine from several feet away. You'll need to get close to notice any softness.

I made a 16 x 24 print from about 4 megapixels a few weeks ago. It wasn't the sharpest thing in the world, but the client loved it.

Ok, now I got it. What i am going to do is to expand the 4x6 @300 dpi to 12x18 @200 dpi and then cut a portion of it in the size of 4x6 and go for print. If the 4x6 comes out well. Then I am done. If it dont come out well then may be I should drop the whole idea.

Thank you all for helping me.

Yup, you got it. Make sure when you do the crop for the 4x6 you use the rectangular marquee tool, set it to "Fixed Size" and enter the values 800 px and 1200 px. Then drag the marquee tool, which won't expand, it will only move now, to the desired location and then press Image > Crop. This will make sure that you are not resampling the 4x6 again.

Before upsizing you might want to read this tutorial:

Adding a bit of noise after upsizing might also help to make the image appear sharper...
