Anything to do with Sutter?

Kind of. The statue is not Sutter, though.

Something to do with the Mason Dixon Line i.e. is it a statue of one of them pointing at a significant "stone" in the line?

No.

That's the man, and the place. In the statue, he's pointing down to the spot on the American River where he accidentally discovered gold in 1848. That discovery spawned the "California Gold Rush" that literally put California on the map overnight and hastened it's admission into the union as a state.

Your turn, Roy.

I've been to the American River and Sutter's Mill but haven't seen that statue - and it can't be too far from the mill!

Here's my next one -

It's on that little hill just behind the town. Did you see Marshall's cabin and the Saint John's Catholic church? It's right above those. Not far from the mill at all.

As for your new picture, those ruins look an awful lot like ones I've seen in the Painted Desert and Grand Canyon parks, but the vegetation in the background doesn't look right.

I certainly saw Marshall's Cabin, but didn't notice the statue - d'oh!

The picture isn't the Grand Canyon or Painted Desert.

It is.

Really? Hmmm... So, I was at least in the right state with my guess, then.

I know you recently went to Tombstone, so is it in the southeastern part of the state?

That looks like it could be a major city in the distance. Is this near Phoenix?
