I went to my spot with the nesting House Wrens to get some more shots. I was doing good, they were showing off, singing and posing, when all of a sudden a big nasty Northern Flicker dropped in for a morning omelette.

The Wrens went nuts, instantly attacking it. It's the first time I've heard their danger call. The Flicker was on the far side of the tree most of the time, so I didn't get any decent shots, but I saw one wren fly at it and heard the thump from behind the tree and that flicker left for parts unknown in a hurry. I guess the little wren flew right into it as a last desparate attempt to drive it off, and it worked.

A few minutes later it's like it never happened, they were back to singing and sitting on eggs.

He's just checking out the scenery...

Thanks Kolok and Jason. I spotted this nesting pair a couple weeks ago, so I have a captive audience, at least for awhile. It sure took a lot of patience to break the ice for wrens the first time though. :)

Nice images Mitch. Even the "Peek-a-boo" Flicker! Wrens are cute. I just have a hard time getting a clear images of them.

Thanks Mom, Ed, Reyno and Rick. I had been there getting great shots for almost 2 hours before the Flicker showed up. I'm glad I have the patience for this. :)

Thank goodness, you've finally been able to get out of the house. Lovely series Mitch, but a little short on the story line

Love those house wrens. I have a family that follows my cat around and announces where she is in the yard.

Great shots, even the flicker! ;)

I have seen Wrens go absolutely ballistic on my neighbours cunning, crouching, orange devil of a hunting feline. The poor cat never stands a chance...they spot him 50 feet away and call out and then the air attack starts. These are wonderful shots of tough little birds. Nice work. BTW, I really enjoy the story lines...it brings the pictures to life. Thanks.

Great story and series. I really enjoyed the adventure. I am from Wisconsin and loved watching this wren in my early years. I miss seeing them here, except during migration. Thanks for sharing these. This brought back some memories for me:lol:
