The majority of this bird is sadly out of focus, but the color contrast between the bird's reddish head and the green background struck me as interesting enough to post.

The difference from front to back just shows how narrow dof can really be. Still as a portrait it ain't bad. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for the kind words. I've found that when I try to move to a smaller aperture I end up shooting at shutter speeds that allow too much movement and blurring. Seems like when the lighting supports those shutter speeds, the birds are taking a break. When they're active and posing for photographs the light is usually too dim to use an aperture that would keep the entire bird in focus. Decisions, decisions...

I don't know why I like this shot so much... must be the color contrast and background. Thanks for the comments, though...

Very nice portrait. Agree with you about the colors. One compliments the other.

Excellent composition. I really like it. I hear ya on the DOF, most of my shots have the tail either out of focus or slightly out of focus for just the reasons you expressed, when the light is optimal for smaller aperture settings, the birds are taking a break. :)

Love the composition and pose. The head is sharp so the shallow DOF does not bother me. Nicely done. :)

I like it, you got the important things in focus, that is the eyes, great back ground too.

I really like the shallow DOF in this case. Very interesting pose and great color.
