The majority of this bird is sadly out of focus, but the color contrast between the bird's reddish head and the green background struck me as interesting enough to post.

I've found that when I try to move to a smaller aperture I end up shooting at shutter speeds that allow too much movement and blurring. Seems like when the lighting supports those shutter speeds, the birds are taking a break. When they're active and posing for photographs the light is usually too dim to use an aperture that would keep the entire bird in focus. Decisions, decisions... "Slower minds keep right..."

I hear ya on the DOF, most of my shots have the tail either out of focus or slightly out of focus for just the reasons you expressed, when the light is optimal for smaller aperture settings, the birds are taking a break.
