I use Photoshop all day, every day, and I'm developing RSI in the wrist and index finger of my mouse hand.

Would a graphics tablet be a better option for me? Any advice would be appreciated.

Damo.

They say its more ergonomical... definately better than using a laptop touchpad, I'll tell you that. But, of course any device you use can cause RSI.

I got the cheapest Wacom tablet... graphire4 4x5, I like it.

Using a graphics tablet is just like using a pen, the change in the position of your wrist and fingers from mouse to pen may help to relieve the pressure on the nerve. But make sure it is rsi, I was diagnosed by the doctor with rsi and he sent me to a physio and she discovered it wasnt rsi, but a collapsed bone on the top of my hand.

I got one of those a couple of months ago, and yes, it worked well for a while. But the pain has been creeping back recently.

For me once that kind of pain started nothing worked except changing my habits. I even changed jobs just so I would do less repetitive keyboard tasks. Then the pain went away.

but who can give up Photoshop?! too hard...

id say another thing u can do is exercise your wrist by squeezing a ball and stretch your hands by putting your palm up, grab your fingers and gently bend them back. Oh, and dont have such long sessions on the computer. take break after a while and rest it up.

I have a tablet, though not a very good one so not use it much, and no drivers for my imac, but I also bought one of these in fact I have several now.

http://www.evoluent.com/vm3.html (external link), These are not the cheapest of Mouses, but certainly help, but best help of all is rest, change position, change what you use, ie go mouse, then pen etc.

I am a full time programer and find myself at the PC often for 'all nighters'. Preventing thoose types of pains is really simple.
1. FORCE yourself into good posture
2. use a good chair/desk/mouse/keyboard
3. WALK AWAY often! Take a min and get up look around / outside ect

I love my watcom and track ball, I feel both do help but the bottom line is if you do not get away a few mins every couple hours you WILL injure yourself

Best advice, yet, I think... it really does have to be a combination of things, there is no cure all.

I use the orbit ball mouse at home, but at work i use the mouse and i can feel the my wrist starting to hurt. I only use the mouse a few minutes at a time a few times a day. Maybe a orbit ball would help. pos

Something else to consider is the level of your keyboard & mouse pad/tablet - this has made a world of difference for me. My day job requires 8hrs on the comp/mouse and I was getting the pains in my wrist and arms, until I got a keyboard tray. I don't like it so low, but the benifits are worth it.
