As we get to know our new camera we will try different settings to find our own preferences.

I thought we could start a collection of settings suitable for different types of photography. For example best settings for motorsports, birds in flight, etc

Maybe even save the settings and attach them here for free use ?

I have created a simple excel spreadsheet where I will add the different settings that will be posted. Nothing fancy.

Can be downloaded here. (external link)

Thanks. So since we got the first set I will delete all the posts before that one so we can keep the thread clean.

HI, was playing yesterday doing BIF shots and adjusting various settings and have just gone through and compared to Jim Victorys list, I had have come to almost exactly the same settings with the exception of C.Fn II 7, I liked having viewfinder info enabled in order to see how many shots left in a burst, having said that though I didn't hit the buffer at any point, so may not be necessary,:) are there any negatives to this?

Alex

LAst weekend a few of us were out shooting Osprey fishing.
When they dive, and all the action is happening fast we all tend to let the 1D fast FPS do some of the "timing" for our shots,
Yopu could here the "click click click click... " of five 1D cameras at faster than 8FPS at the start of a dive, through the lift off, but at the end all taper off one at a time until all you heard was the one, at 10FPS!
That was the lone 1D MkIII in the group, still shooting and still buffered up. :)

And one grinning photographer, I am sure!

Seen some of the pics from your trip in Birds section, superb stuff!

I hope one of you knowledgeable people can help me with the custom settings on my Mark III and viewing which af points are being used for focusing.

First I "believe" that I set the af to automatic selection by pressing the af selection button and turning the main dial until I see the af points appear in a circle around the viewfinder.

I would like to see which of the af points are being used to focus on the image. I have the "play" ** set to "af point display - enable.

My custom settings are default in group III except for:

4 - 1
5 - 1
7 - 2
8 - 2
10 - 1

Please note that setting 9 (selectable af point) is at 0.

Also, sometimes the lcd displays a group of af points that achieved focus, sometimes not.

Thanks for your help.

It's frustrating knocking the AF points down to one - albeit some say that the mk III doesn't totally disregard the rest. I have mine set to expand the chosen point to the surrounding assist points.

Seems to work OK for motorsport, but it would be nice to be able to use the entire 9 center points.

Feel free to delete this post to maintain the purity of the CF-N thread.

It's a .pdf file 13 pages and cost $20

I printed it out and seems very resourceful.

I set mine this evening to almost all of Tommy's setting. Only difference was I did limit the burst to a lower number instead of max.

Harry, did you get an answer to your question? I too am interested in seeing which AF points are being used. I was going to play around this evening with a bunch of setting and have the manual on my screen, but if someone figured out why I lose mine when I depress the shoot button, your assistance would be appreciated.

Thanks. I hope more good photogs like Tommy post their settings here, it sure is both helpful and educational. Thanks Tommy.

Joe
