I've tried to add Racketman's setting to the spread sheet, some are not in the same format and section IV is not there. I haven't looked to see what these settings are, but I appreciate seeing different ideas and will try these also for bif and fast moving subjects/targets. Thank you. Did the person add the IV section?

I've just downloaded my images from daughter's graduation. So many keepers compared to with my 30D. I also used for a few of them, the Canon TC 2x and 1.4x together and separately, still looked acceptable. I did do one bird in flight, not too good due to the TC's, but better than anything with the AF of the 30D. I couldn't be any happier with teh the Mark III. Images were sharp and right on AF point. Best images I've ever taken. Using teh 85mm 1.2 II afterwards for some portrait type shots gave me a couple of beautiful shots, stunningly beautiful! crisp colors, dead on focus, wow. Anyone who says that the camera can't help you as a photographer is dead wrong, it can help. Like a golf club I guess in some ways. Sure, using an old persimmon club can give you a dead on straight 275 yard shot with the right swing, but the new big metal heads can still give you a much better off center hit than an off hit with a persimmon. In golf, one hopes their bad shots are not horrible, same thing with my camera, my bad shots are still better than some of my decent shots with teh 30D. This camera rocks!

How do I get my MkIII to shoot like an older 1D with * CF4-1 enabled ?

Canon offers more options on the Mark III for this, but some of us want CF 4-1 settings exactly.

IE: Shutter half press locks exposure, full press releases shutter, and * button activates focus.

The setting for the AF button and Shutter to work exactly like this is CFn IV-1 set to "3"

This uses the AF Start button as opposed to *
You can use * instead by swapping these two buttons, enable CFn IV-2 to "1"

I prefer those exact same settings also and haven't found a way, but until you actually posted this, I have not set out on a mission to make it work that way. I am gonna play with it later and see.

Yesterday, I used some of the Arthur Morris settings in his guide he sells. Before I knew it, the thumb-dial on the back was only good for changing AF points. I was in the manual mode and the back dial would change nothing but AF points. I hated that and although I was walking in the neighborhood trying to find birds, I had to continue to change settings until I got it off that setting.

Oh, by the way, I don't think Arthur Morris adds much to the user knowledge base in his paper. If his guide is worth $20, then the Mark III threads here are worth $500!

1D Mark III Settings Help.

I am a portrait photographer and have the rare break in my schedule that is going to allow me to take my son to the races (dirt track) this week. I have my 1D set up with center focussing point only and one shot AF and use the 70-200 2.8 IS and 85 1.2 most of the time for lenses.

I do have a 1.4 converter but that 70-200 lens is my longest.

Can anyone recomend some set up tips.

The race will be in the evening going into the night. will flashes help (580ex II) at all or is the action too far out of range?

Any suggestions will be appreciated, I know there are a lot of action photographers on this site.

Received today in email:

Dear Joe ,

Thank you for using Canon products. The following is an important announcement concerning images shot with the Canon EOS-1D Mark III Digital SLR Camera.

Caution:

There is a function where you can set the first four characters in file names as desired, using the File Name Setting in the Set-up 1 menu of the EOS-1D Mark III digital SLR camera. Before you shoot in either User setting option, you must first set up a valid file name in User setting 1 and/or User setting 2. You can register file names with four alphanumeric characters at User setting 1, and three alphanumeric characters at User setting 2 (for more details, see pp. 77 - 78 in the instruction manual). Please note that the four characters in the "Preset Code" are set at the factory and cannot be altered.

If you do not set up a file name, a "blank" value will remain (where no file name is displayed in User setting 1 or 2; see the "Not registered" example above). If you shoot in either User setting option that has a blank value, images shot will be stored to your memory card but cannot be viewed on the camera display. If you want to customize your file names with this feature, please be sure to set up file names first by registering up to four alphanumeric characters in User setting 1 and up to three alphanumeric characters in User setting 2 before shooting in these modes. Once you set up a valid file name, you can freely change it at any time.

does anyone else dislike the new selectable AF point settings (inner or outer 9)? i like the old way with af points covering both inside and out in a logically selected fashion. at the moment i'm using 'outer 9' (C.Fn III-9 2)

also, is the behaviour of the old C.Fn 17 like C.Fn III-8 1 or 2?

Thanks Permagrin for taking the time to help us out. I'm not sure though, is this for birding, regular shooting, whatever? You mention that when you do BIF you change a couple of settings, so what is the original settings used for? Thanks again.

1D MIII Equivalent of MII CF-4

I just got my MIII yesterday and am a little confused by the CF choices. With the addition of the AF-ON button, it seems that we can control AF start and stop from that, OR half shutter press without changing any CF settings. I have always used my II and IIN bodies set with CF-4 to 1 or 3 so that the * key controlled AF, and not the half press of the shutter? I have been through the MIII CF settings and find similar worded choices, but nothing that appears to do the same as CF-4. How are you guys setting this up to mimic the IIN behavior? Thanks.

Id like to hear feedback from anyone shooting in low light auto racing. I will be shooting with this beauty Saturday night at a Sprint Car Race here in California. Any CFn suggestions based on low (artificial) light expierience would be greatly appreciated.
I have a ton of examples for comparisson up of my MkII at
www.pbase.com/slamothe (external link)

I should have the MKIII pics up by Wednesday Night

I shoot Sprint Boats and have shot two night races so far. The first night race was with the MKII and the second with the MKIII. I didn't get as many night shots with the MKIII as with the MKII as that race ended 1 hour earlier than the first. However, the MKIII focusing (AI Servo mind you!) was more accurate, faster and of course, the noise was nil. Proper exposure was also much more accurate with the MKIII and the colors were much better.

I didn't change any CF's from when I shoot daytime races (these races progress from daytime to night). However, the next night race I will definitely set the ISO-Shift to ON. I was still so new to the MKIII (had it just a week) on the first outing that I was not aware for ISO-Shift. Other than that, run with your standard settings.
