Between those posts and the "what should I buy next" threads they have to constitute a large volume of the bandwidth on this site. I wonder how many people would be completely happy with their new glass had they not posted or ever read a sharpness thread.
Or found out about 'pixel peeping/100% crops'. Honestly how many times have you looked at a developed photo at 100% and though, "way too soft"?
There was one thread started not too long ago where someone wanted to know if their lens was 'sharp'. Now I dont know who it was nor do I care, I honestly dont....really...dont, nor am I bashing the person. But the O.P. took a photo of a helicopter, probably flying several hundred feet in the air, and posted a 100% crop of the heli and asked if it was sharp.
A severe case of pixel peeping I thought. But it can happen very easily when so many threads critique sharpness to death.
Cause and effect.
Then you got the 'which lens to buy'. I try to stay away from those when buying something, there will always be someone who doesnt like the suggestions and recommend something else. I made that mistake myself (starting the thread not the lens choice) and somehow it got completely off topic.
