I was walking along this morning (in Southern Queensland) trying to take some pictures of a willie wagtail when I saw these birds playing in the grass. They were only about 2 inches long... Does anyone know what they are?

Thanks :)

Beautiful shots James. It looks like some sort of Wren. Nice.

Thanks very much :)

I will certainly be looking more closely around me as I walk in future. They were so small I first thought they might have been grasshoppers! Perhaps they might be juveniles...

Unusual - it's certainly a Cisticola of some sort. We have one species in Europe (extremely rare in UK) which we commonly call the Fan-tailed Warbler, it's official name is Zitting Cisticola!! Anyway it's similar looking to yours but not identical so I'd hazard a guess at Golden-headed Cisticola?

Hi James
Great shots, I think it is a Golden Headed Cisticola

Thanks for the help with the ID, and the kind feedback :) I had never even noticed these birds before, I will be on the lookout in future...

It looks we do have the Zitting Cisticola in Australia too, but not on the Gold Coast...

I concer. It's a Golden-headed Cisiticola - non-breeding. If it was breeding it wouldn't have the strips on top of the head.

Wonderful captures by the way :)

Thanks again :)

I have the "Field Guide To Australian Birds". Is there another reference if I want to get more data - such as the bit about breeding & stripes on the head?
