Hi
Hope someone can explain this to me....

When I bring one of my cropped/edited photos into PS, the image size is 19.25 MB (for example). I need to resize it for a contest, so I change the resolution to 300 and lower the pixel dimensions, so the new file size is now 4.81MB.

Now, when I view that same photo in Bridge in the Metadata, it says the file size is 263KB?

Why?

Thanks
Ruth

Hi Ruth,

I'm guessing that you saved your file as a .jpg file. This file type uses a compression algorithm to make the file smaller when it is closed. When you look at a .jpg file when it is opened, it will show as it's actual size, when you look at the file when it is closed, in bridge, it shows the file size as compressed by the .jpg algorithm . The compressed file size will vary depending upon the quality setting that you use when you save as a .jpg. The higher quality setting you choose, the larger the .jpg file will be when closed. Using a lower quality setting makes the file smaller when closed, but can degrade the image quality.

I hope this helps,

Ed

Thank you Ed, it makes sense. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
