I'm planning on combining the shots with normal video footage and other stuff shot during the week too, so will be sticking to normal def video... But I'll have the files to produce a high def timelapse of the journey if needed to so...

You clearly haven't driven much in Britain, Doc. Tarmac ranges from nearly black to light-mid grey. Some major roads are concrete which is a light grey/beige colour. I'd estimate that there's a range of at least 2, maybe 3 stops between 'dark' road surfaces and 'light' road surfaces.

'Tis the same anywhere, actually. The very street I live on has the same extremes - black to very light gray.

This is why I suggested using an incident light meter out the window to know how much light is falling on the scene rather than trying to work with a reflected light meter.

That's because you live in Canada where everything is squared away and perfect ;) Around where I live the local city streets are black and the highways are a light grey concrete like colour.
