While there is much harping on the "lazy" kids that seem to abound these days...I'd like to mention there are plenty of kids who work their way through high school and college. I'd hate to see schools force kids who are already working hard to pay for school, in addition to keeping up with their schoolwork, try to find time to "volunteer" for community service.

I am totally opposed to forced labor as demanded by our arrogant educational elitists. It most certainly is not 'volunteering'; it is actually a form of slavery. However, I can see how it does add a bit of palovian training to a young mind. And I can see where some would prefer that sort of thing, but I have concerns. If one wishes to do some sort of community service, then by all means do so. It is commendable. But don't demand it of others under the guise of 'education'. Let people make up their own minds and plan their own lives. Its a little thing called freedom of choice. Something we have less and less of these days.

I think community service is vital. This forum is community service. Nobody got paid for helping you in your class. Is that not service? (Count out the two or three that posted out of selfish reasons).

PEople think of community service as cleaning up the freway cented divider with a pointy stick and an orange vest. What if it was a Free photo Workshop for youth at a local Cultural Center? Is that not worth doing?...

Most folks nowadays are too damn selfish. IMO

Amen.

As to whether it should be a requirement for graduation... suzyb made a good point. However, I worked my way through college, sometimes having 2 or 3 jobs to make ends meet and I still volunteered for Special Olympics in my free time. Was it easy? No. But it was something that I chose to do.

I guess not everyone would make the same choice, but I agree that they should have that choice.

Almost every social exchange/interaction is ultimately for selfish reasons, help the aged? makes you feel better.
Feed the homeless, makes you feel better, look at me i'm a good person.
The world is full of doogooders with a concience to salve.
The truly great of heart have no need to broadcast their good deeds or build tangible monuments to their generosity. Neither do they have a need to attempt to discredit or belittle others opinions or character because they disagree with them. :)

The difference with this forced work is it's others getting the feelgood jollies for your (the students) sweat and time. I'm a great person I set 3000 students to help rebuild/work our community, they needed it. Their lazy and it builds character. haha yea right, very judgemental it appears to me and good social points for no personal sweat.

sblais, no my friend I hate no man. I learned the hard way life is far too short to go around hating or judging others, neither should we impose our ideals on them. I respect your views, just don't agree with them, but then I'm only advocating a free choice here.

Last time I was in university was approx 13 yrs ago, there was no forced volunteer work, would doubt there is any kind of program here now.

Work experience is not forced volunteer work (if such a thing exists) Work experience is a great way of learning from the professionals on many levels and equipping the student with valuable experience he will use in his chosen profession.

So to clear things up, explain to me please how every student gets exactly the work he requires to do? I assume there are a set amount of places for the students? what happens when the good/relevant assignments/positions are taken? does young john/joan get the crap at the bottom of the barrel? or does he just have to suck it up and not graduate?

Quite worrying really for society as a whole that anyone would want to enforce their ideals on others because they think others need it.

Well said! We are up to our elbows in the "Me" generation...it is all about "Me." My wife and I perform Community service today and my kids did so when they were in college...and two them continue to this day.

Certainly not. Not because I don't agree with community service, Paris Hilton should be doing all of that for us!
