I found this image online and was wondering how easy or difficult it would be to do this to mine own photo (the cartoon look). Are there any tutorials online. Thanks in advance. Todd

Looks to me like that's a drawing from a program like Adobe Illustrator or Corel Draw.

Maybe I'm wrong but this image is of a REAL professional surfer. I think it might be traced, but I'm not sure how they did the entire image. Anybody else have input on this?

It's a Vector Illustration done in one of many vector drawing programs. It could have been hand drawn, or something from a combination of 2 photos, tuned into a vector illustration. Some of these apps have a tracer function built in.

There was an excellent magazine that I used to buy called 'Computer Arts' that had some great tutorials and advice that could create something like this. It seems that they now have their Tutorials for Download on their website as PDFs:

http://www.computerarts.co.uk/tutorials/ (external link)

A lot of apps are used in these tutorials including older Macromedia products, CAD applications and Adobe Illustrator BUT they also use a lot of PhotoShop (there is plenty you can do with Vectors in Photoshop also - the 'pen' tool is just super for creating smooth vectors), but I hope you find something useful there.

...I started looking for some suitable tutorials, but there were just stacks and I think you can spend time to look through a few (not 'I'), but maybe these are of use:

please try to look for others too..

Bon Voyage,
modern andrew

It's not a vector illustration. You can do this in photoshop with any photograph. My wife showed me how once but I just looked at her and said "I had no idea it would take so long".

Classic example:

IMAGE NOT FOUND
HTTP response: 404 | MIME changed to 'text/html' | Byte size: ZERO

I used to own a bike exactly like this. It's technically perfect and could only come from a photograph and it did.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

how can you be sure :P ?

there are plenty of ways to achieve this style, but too wordy/technical for me to discuss here...

It starts as a photograph. Trust me. Some images out there are done in illustrator, but masking over an existing photograph is way easier.

My wife is talking about magic wand, setting tolerance levels on colors then using fills... We both use CS3 for very different purposes.
