Nice shots Mitch. I especially like the last shot of the last two you posted.

What I found through several weeks of practice now, was that it works. Birds look like they are always moving, but the fact is, between moves, they are stock still, and when you shoot at 3 fps, you get a better than half number of good in focus keepers. Sure, some junk, but I always get some junk shots anyway. So, the amazing keepers I have taken far outweighs the junk shots I have to delete.

Didn't think to shoot continuos. I always just snap one. I'll have to give it a try.

Here's an example of what happened with the 100mm Macro, about 1' away from a hummer. She was calm and sitting on the feeder. Half shutter to acquire focus didn't bother her. Then I pressed the shutter, and as soon as the mirror slapped open boom. I watched with my left eye as she popped up and started flapping. Only very high shutter speed would have saved this one. I had many shots just like this :). She jumped every time. The males weren't as jumpy, but they flinched enough to blur the picture pretty bad.

Thanks Adi. That one was while it was raining and he was all puffed up. I thought it was cute. :)

JC, my 30D is always on slow burst mode. A lot of birds will flinch when they hear the shutter, but the steady beat they seem to get use to. There are pleny of other reasons to use burst mode too cause you just never know what might happen next. Also, just the act of pressing the button can move the camera a little bit, but once it's held down it seems to be more steady. Worth a try anyway. :)
