Right Ive Agreed to take some shots of friends on bmx's at the local skate park and some good spots. Il be using my Canon EOS 400D but I only have the 18-55mm kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8.

Will this be of any good?

Use the 18-55. Take a flash, get real close and shoot at 18mm.

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional
Full frame and some primes.

Take both lenses and start with the above advice.

Canon 1D3, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (sale), 1.4x converter, 580EX.

If it's on their dime, 580EX II.

If you wan't to shoot ONLY bmx/sports, then some radio slaves and a couple vivitars would be good.

You should be fine, even if you only brought the prime. Pick a jump, rail, whatever and find the sweet spot where you fill the frame (if that's what your looking for) with you subject. Stay there and let them come to you.
