I shoot action sports and my 10D has been acting up lately.. when I shoot, I get an error99 message and it doesn't record the image.. Many good shots have been lost.. Has anyone else had this problem and how would I go about it to fix it.. Please help..

99 is the default way to let you know there's a comunication problem with your lens. check contacts, and make sure your lens is made by canon. if problem persists, call canon.

When I remove the lens and shoot it still happens.. (with no lens)
I use a Sigma 70-200 2.8 and there is no problem with that lens on my D30 or D60...

I had to send my Sigma back to Sigma to be re-chipped to eliminate the occasional error99. They did it for free. You can contact them through their website and they can let you know pretty quickly if your lens is compatible with the 10d.

if this happens with no lens attached, i'd recomend to send it in to canon. the only thing i would be willing to try is dropping it a few time (j/k).

try to update the firmware - that might fix it.

I sent an earlier post on this problem. My tokina 28-80 pro dosn,t work with my 10d however my brand new Tokina 80-400 is OK.
I,ve been told early Sigma lenses give the same problem. It seems the 3rd part manufacturers earlier lenses don,t have the right chipset compatible with the 10d. However all the canon lenses should be OK.

I was shooting soccer last spring and got an error99. "Reggie" at the canon service center in New Jersey told me to send it in, and I had it back and fully functioning in less than 10 days. I had checked the web and tried all my other lenses, plus the body without lenses, took off the grip, and still error99. Turns out I had a shutter problem. When I pressed the shutter button, the mirror would not go up- it would only click. I'm not sure if you are having the exact same problem, but canon did right by me...even though I had to ship it to NJ. Were I you, I would call them.

Judder,

Thanks, but when I try my Canon 28-105 lens, it still happens.. Even when I don't use a lense and just release, it gives me the same error99

I think it's more than just the lens... It needs to go to the camera doctor?

the only error 99 i've ever had on the 10d was on a 'needed to be chipped' sigma, which i ultimately returned and got a bigma.

on the 300d, i had a err 02, which turned out to be a funkily formatted flashcard. after i tried to format it in the camera, it just kept giving me a err 99 - with every lens. i remember reading either in the manual (not likely) or on this board, to yank out the battery. i did that and voila! no more err 99. you might give it a try. otherwise then you'll probably need to visit your nearest service centre.

good luck!

Call them first and arrange for them to be expecting your camera. I think they may have had some special shipping instructions, as well. I believe I called the 800 number first. I called and talked to the service center once they were working on the camera. Mine works splendidly. I think they even updated the firmware while it was there.
