I guess it pays to watch where you step when out hunting wildflowers. About one more step without seeing this guy and I would have been doing the happy dance to avoid stepping right on him. I do not mind snakes when I see them far enough ahead of time. This one was cutting it a little close. I know it is just a water snake but I am not a big snake fan. He was a good subject and let me take a few pictures.

Nice. He would have scared the cr@p out of me and I would have missed the shot!

We have a nasty water snake by my house, he's black and about 8 feet long! Not harmful to us, but scary none the less!

"just a water snake" - Don't matter what it is. That thing is fat and would have scared the crap out of me.

Good job getting the picture before getting out of there.

Looks like it might be a Copperhead to me. That would make it poisonous. Not totally sure though.

Thanks for the comments. It was a pretty good sized snake. I am just happy he was not too active and that I had the 150 macro on so I did not have to get too close.
I do not think it is a copperhead. They do not have round eyes like this guy does. That was the first thing I looked for before deciding if I should run or take pictures.

Not a copperhead. Nice shot though, glad you saw it and captured it.
