importing files into lightroom ????

I was messing around in lightroom, still trying to figure the program out. it seems like an awesome program. Implementation is a pain in the rear though. I am importing ALL my files from the last couple of years. Problem is that i have to do it sub folder by sub folder. If I pick master folder (say my European vacation pictures) that i have broken down to each location in sub folders, and just drag that into lightroom. It will come back with some sort of message that some pictures could not be imported due to to many reasons to show.

So If I just pick each sub folder then copy it, it then shows me which files are duplicates, which is nice!!! Just very time consuming. Does anybody have a full proof, easy way to import. Or is this a common occurrence.

It sounds to me like you have RAW and jpeg images in the same folder. If this is the case you can not import them into LR unless you change the name of one or the other, or put them in seperate folders.

Can you at least list some of the errors?

a vast majority of my files are raw (with the new camera) there are a couple rare instnaces where i have converted a raw to jpg. In this case. Will lightroom default to adding the raw file to the database over the jpg file?

Yes, I believe it will. However, I don't have any RAW and JPEG files in the same folder with the same name so I am not sure.

Yes, from my experience it will always take the RAW over the jpeg of same name.

If I choose Import & copy to new location and select all files (including my JPEG duplicates), it still seems to copy BOTH files, while only "importing" the RAW file. Is that right?

Yeah, that does get confusing... you are correct. Copies the jpegs, but only imports the RAW. Hopefully they add option of importing jpegs also.
