Mark,

My new 30D came with a speck of something in the viewfinder. Do you think I should just wait after a year (or however long) before I get a little dust in the viewfinder and then just send it to Canon (or local repair shop) to have it cleaned? Dust and particles in the viewfinder is no big deal?

i had a fairly large speck at the top of my viewfinder for a while, and it was irritating, but it went away on its own one day.

No sweat cleaning the viewfinder. I send my cameras to Canon every 6 months and they clean them easily. :)

While we're on the subject of viewfinders has anyone else ever found an air bubble in the glass of the viewfinder optics? My new 400D seems to have one. It's not visible with my eye up close, but if I look through it from about 10-20cm away, it's quite obvious in the upper left corner.

I'm thinking it's not worth sending the camera back for repair as it doesn't affect my shots.

10, 20 and 30D do not have interchangeable focus screens, so cannot be easily removed by the user for cleaning. The 40D, 5D, 1D-series and EOS3 are the only current or recent models that have user-changeable focus screens. These are more easily cleaned (if done very, very carefully) but are also more prone to getting dust on them, than the sealed screens on the other cameras.

If you have a camera with non-removable focus screen, or one that's removable but are at all uncertain how to proceed, I'd strongly suggest you have a local camera repair tech clean it for you, as well as the mirror. These are common tasks for camera techs, not really a reason to ship the camera off to Canon (unless it's under warranty).

Even with the removable focus screen, this might not be something inexperienced people should be trying to do. There are lots of ways to do damage and get in trouble with the mirror, focusing screen, light seals, etc. Use the wrong products on the mirror or screen and you will be paying for a replacement.

Regarding bubbles in lenses... This is really not all that uncommon. In fact, it's long been considered an indication of the very highest quality optical glass. Makers will usually not allow an element with a bubble in a really critical area to be used (say if a bubble is near the center). But, some of the finest lenses ever made by Zeiss, Leica, Schneider, Nikon, etc. frequently had tiny bubbles in the fringes or peripheries of elements. My EF 100/2.8 Macro has a bubble or two near the edge of one of the front elements. I actually chose this particular lens for just that reason.

i know this is an old thread, however I found a how to clean out the dust in your viewfinder with pictures.

I had some dust stuck between the focusing screen as well as the AF area. thanks to this link, lens cleaning paper, and a dust blower, problem was solved. I can rest easy now.

I had lots of dust inside of the viewfinder. there is no way of cleaning that unless you take the camera apart. If that is your case and you have warranty I suggest you take it in to Canon. If you don`t have a warranty it will cost $200+
