Zoombrowser (ZB) 5.8 on my PC crashes upon startup. A popup window says
"ZoomBrowser.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" and prompts to send an error report to Microsoft.

The error signature says AppName: zoombrowser.exe, AppVer: 5.8.0.74, ModName: msvcr80.dll, ModVer: 8.0.50727.42, and provides further details on what will be reported to Microsoft if the error report is sent.

ZB 5.6 was supplied with my 30D, along with some version of EOS Utility and Digital Photo Professional (DPP). I installed these from the disk that came with the camera on a PC with Windows XP service Pack 2 and all Microsoft updates, and all worked fine.

I updated ZB to 5.8, EOS Utility to 2.01.25, and DPP to 3.0.1.5 because they were offered on the Canon website under support for the 30D. The Canon website sort-of says all three should be updated at the same time as they work together. The updated EOS Utility and DPP appear to work fine, but ZB starts, draws most of the main window, then the Microsoft error popup appears.

Has anyone seen and solved this problem? ZB 5.8 was just released recently, and I haven't been able to find any mention of this problem on this website or others. I'd like to solve the problem, getting ZB to work rather than use a card reader. Of course, I can revert to the versions that came with the camera, but where's the challenge in that!

Just to close this thread... I got it to work by re-installing the 3 applications (ZP, DPP and EOS Utility) without first uninstalling them. Perhaps the problem was due to the order in which the 3 were installed, I don't know.

I am having the same problem.
I have not been able to solve it by the above method. I have also uninstalled, rebooted, installed and rebooted all of the applications with no success.
any other answers out there?
